History comes alive…just in time for Halloween. Step into downtown Pittsboro for an unforgettable evening of local folklore and historical reenactments. The 2026 “Spirits of Pittsboro’s Past" walking tour blends Chatham County’s rich heritage with stories and legends, presented by costumed interpreters portraying figures from the town’s past.

The journey begins at the historic courthouse and winds through old cemeteries, churches, and hidden corners, with each stop offering a window into the people and moments that shaped Pittsboro.

This isn’t your typical history lesson -- expect drama, humor, and plenty of surprises as you explore hidden corners and untold tales that make Pittsboro unique. Whether you are a local or a first-time visitor, you will see Pittsboro in a whole new light.

Tour details:

Date of this tour: Friday, October 23
Time: Check in at 5:15 pm; tours begin at 5:30 and last 90-120 minutes
Location: Start at the Historic Chatham Courthouse (9 Hillsboro St)
Tickets: $25 for CCHA members; $30 for nonmembers (members may purchase guest tickets at member price). Members only ticket sales start September 13; nonmember sales begin October 1 (if available). Tickets available online only.
Group size: Limited to 60 participants per evening, split into three small groups for a more personal experience.
Age requirement: 12 years and older only (no pets or strollers)
Weather: Rain or shine (rescheduled only in case of severe weather)

Important notes:

Bring a flashlight and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.
A liability waiver will be required at check-in.

“NC History Between the Lines”- A Local History Book Club

The Tuscarora War: Indians, Settlers, and The Fight for the Carolina Colonies by David La Vere (2013)

Step back into early 18th century North Carolina for a fascinating look at one of the most consequential conflicts in the colony's early history. The Tuscarora War explores the struggle between the Tuscarora people and European settlers with the competing pressures of land, trade, power, and cultural survival which led to war in 1711.

The conflict changed the political and geographic landscape of North Carolina and had lasting consequences for the native communities. We will discuss what this history tells us about the people who lived there before other communities took shape and how the events of the early 1700s helped shape North Carolina of today.

The Chatham County Historical Museum invites you to join NC History Between the Lines, a monthly book club exploring our local area’s rich past through engaging reads that connect with historical themes. We’ll meet on the third Saturday of each month at 9:30 am at the museum for lively discussion and conversation.

Each month’s selection will reflect our rotating historical focus. Whether you’re a lifelong history lover or simply curious about the people and events that shaped our area, we would love for you to join us. Come read, learn, and share your perspectives as we connect our local stories to the larger sweep of American history.
