Other Revolutionaries: Life on the Home Front During the American Revolution

The focus of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution is on the excitement of combat. But the majority of people living through the Revolution were not fighters. Their focus was day-to-day survival, complicated by shortages of food, salt, and currency; rampant inflation; short-handed farms and businesses; a brand new government; and raids by partisans on both sides. Loyalist families, and more so enslaved families, faced greater hardships. And war could always show up at your doorstep. Come hear what life was like for the “other revolutionaries” in Chatham County during seven long years of war.

The program is free, and everyone is welcome!

Our presenter will be Jim Morgan, a former professional writer with a master’s degree from the oldest journalism school in the world, the University of Missouri–Columbia. He did university and business writing for many years before shifting to project management and consulting. He has taught team leadership or assisted teams at a wide variety of organizations, including Los Alamos National Laboratory, Microsoft, and Red Hat, and written and presented extensively on the science of teamwork. During the covid lock-downs, Jim worked with three consultants to create AmRevNC. He continues the research and gives tours and presentations. Our State Magazine asked him to write the introductory essay for their American Revolution issue in April. Jim lives in Durham, sails, and has black belts in two martial arts.

The program will be held in the Historic Chatham County Courthouse in the traffic circle in Pittsboro.  The address is 9 Hillsboro St., Pittsboro, NC.  Enter from the north-facing doors. Directions, parking, and accessibility info.

This program will be the fourth in CCHA’s 2025 Gene Brooks lecture series, which honors the contributions to Chatham history of the late Gene Brooks through his teaching and advocacy for the preservation and sharing of Chatham history.
