Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers by David Wright & David Zoby (2002)

Through the story of Richard Etheridge and the all-black crew of the US Life-Saving Service, Fire on the Beach explores the dangers of 19th century coastal transportation along North Carolina’s “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” where ships carrying goods and people faced constant danger. North Carolina in the American Revolution: What Happened Here?

With the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution this year, North Carolina residents can’t help but wonder: What happened here? A lot more than the author of AmRevNC.com thought before he started his research, it turns out! From the first armed confrontation over Parliament’s acts in 1766 to a British raid on Beaufort in 1782, the colony-turned-state has the scenes of: the only fort destroyed by Patriots; action from the mountains to the sea; many instances of courageous women and other minorities; the Overmountain Campaign that turned the tide of the war; an iconic chase between two armies, ending in a climactic battle; and the most vicious civil war between Loyalist and Patriot partisans in the new country. Come become an instant expert and amaze kith and kin with your stories of the Revolutionary War in N.C.

Morgan is a creator of AmRevNC, a website devoted to the history of the battles of the American Revolution that happened here in North Carolina. He is a writer and journalist with a deep knowledge of the American Revolution and the fateful role North Carolina played in it. On Sunday, July 5, he’ll recount some of the historic battles that took place from the mountains to the sea in our colony-turned-state, and introduce us to some of the passionate Loyalists and Patriots who fought for control of this land.

Admission to this talk is free, and all are welcome.

    JULY 2026 ~US INDEPENDENCE

Redcoats on the Cape Fear: The Revolutionary War in Southeastern North Carolina by Robert M Dunkerly (2012, revised version of Redcoats on the River, 2008)

Redcoats on the Cape Fear brings the American Revolution to Chatham County’s doorstep. British troops patrolled the Cape Fear River, and local farmers, townspeople, and militia faced danger, disruption, and difficult choices. Through local stories, this book shows how ordinary people helped shape the fight for independence right here in our area.

The Chatham County Historical Museum invites you to join NC History Between the Lines, a monthly book club exploring our local area’s rich past through engaging reads that connect with historical themes. A Home on the Field by Paul Cuadros (2006)

Set in Siler City during a period of rapid demographic shift driven by the poultry processing industry, Cuadros recounts his experience fighting  to establish a soccer program at Jordan Matthews High School. Against a backdrop of culture clashes, anti-immigrant rallies, and systemic under resourcing, Cuadros coaches a team of young, mostly Latino immigrants, the Jets, to overcome prejudice and poverty to fight for the 2004 NC State Championship.
